A call for a tax on the use of landfill sites for building and demolition rubble, which accounts for a quarter of landfill waste, has been made by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland. The institute said that the measure should be included in the Finance Bill.

It would provide an incentive to recycle the material, according to the RIAI president, Mr Eoin O Cofaigh.
