The British government has come under pressure to launch an inquiry into MI6 links to an attempt to assassinate the Libyan leader, Col Muammar Gadafy, after a British intelligence report detailing the plot was published on the Internet.

The Foreign Secretary, Mr Robin Cook, two years ago denied allegations that British agents were involved in a bombing in 1996 which narrowly failed to kill Col Gadafy but cost the lives of six innocent bystanders.

However, a top secret report on a Yahoo website reportedly disclosed that British intelligence knew two months in advance there would be an attempt to kill Col Gadafy.
