The PSNI has appealed for public assistance in apprehending a man who raped a woman in a park in Bessbrook, Co Armagh, on Saturday afternoon.

The 23-year-old woman was attacked in broad daylight as she walked her two young children in Derramore Woods. The attack only ended when one of the children began to cry and the man ran away.

Police have asked anyone who spotted a man acting suspiciously to come forward. They believe the alleged rapist was in his 50s, white-haired and wearing a beret and a dark-coloured jacket, and walking a white terrier-type dog which was wearing a tartan jacket.

The MP for the area, Sinn Féin Minister Conor Murphy, said the local community was shocked by the abhorrent crime. “The rape of any woman is a horrific crime but to carry it out in front of her two young children shows the depravity of the man involved,” he said.
