The interim leader of the Afghan administration, Mr Hamed Karzai, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt

The interim leader of the Afghan administration, Mr Hamed Karzai, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. His bodyguard was killed in the attempt.

Reports say one of Mr Karzai's own security guards was responsible for the attack. The guard is understood to have fired at Mr Karzai's car as it was leaving the governor's mansion in Kandahar.

The Kandahar governor, Mr Gul Agha Sherzai, was injured and three people were killed in the melee when Mr Karzai's US bodyguards opened fire.

"I was just outside the gate when I heard the gunshots," Mr Sherzai's security chief said. "The Americans opened fire on three people and they were killed".

The president was in Kandahar for his brother's wedding.
