SLIGO WOMAN Catriona McGoldrick who tomorrow faces a 180km round trip to Galway for a mammogram, has outlined the stress such trips cause, amid anger over the Government’s failure to restore mammography services at Sligo General Hospital.

The HSE has confirmed the appointment of two radiographers at University College Hospital Galway is “on hold” because of “a recruitment pause” which means Sligo breast cancer patients will continue to travel to Galway for follow-up mammograms.

After the transfer of the breast cancer unit to Galway in August 2009, repeated undertakings were given that follow-up mammograms would still be done in Sligo.

An emotional Ms McGoldrick said in an interview it was unfair women had to travel such long distances “just to have an X-ray” at such a worrying time.
