Nearly 10,000 homes in Northern Ireland remained without electricity tonight despite engineers working flat out all day to restore power after overnight storms.

High winds reaching hurricane force in places caused havoc, cutting electricity supplies to over 115,000 customers.

NIE said more than 500 staff worked throughout the day to restore power to 106,000, but said the last to be reconnected to the network were unlikely to have power until some time tomorrow.

The winds - the tail of Hurricane Gordon - were recorded at up to 74mph in places and cut a swath of destruction across the province with Mid Ulster, parts of Co Armagh and Co Down worst affected.

Trees were uprooted everywhere blocking roads and motorists were advised to be careful when they ventured out, especially in rural areas.

NIE spokesman Robin Greer said: "Damage has been widespread. We know of well over 800 instances of damage to the network right across Northern Ireland. We are working hard to reconnect people but I would not be surprised if it is tomorrow before we get everyone back on to supply."
