TWO WEEKS ago, Go Nichereferred to a survey that placed Cavan second to Rio de Janeiro as the most "searched" destination for hotels among Irish computer users in February.

Happily, our readers from Cavan were able to provide an explanation – if any were needed – in jig time: the Fleadh.

The town had just been selected to host the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2011, which takes place from August 13th to 22nd.

According to tourism officer Joanne Hayes, the event includes “sessions, fun days, pageants, marching bands, competitions, céilí bands, concerts, singing, busking and arts exhibitions, all part of the biggest celebration of Irish culture in the world”.

Given that the event took place in Cavan last year too, this would indicate that (a) it is indeed a great place to have it and (b) if you are planning on going you need to book your accommodation now.

Thankfully, Cavan has a number of good hotels, including the Radisson Blu Farnham Estate, the Cavan Crystal and the Slieve Russell. The Fleadh website also has a list of approved guesthouses and B&Bs.

The organisers have even put out a call for locals who can offer accommodation in their own homes.

Whichever option appeals to you one thing is certain – if you’re going to the Fleadh you’d want to act fast.

While you were wasting time idly perusing hotels in Rio, your cannier counterparts were already booking their ringside seats in Cavan.
