Rustic style, smart makeover in Co Wicklow for €875,000

A contemporary house with a cottage flavour is back on the market just a year after being sold in June 2015. Its owners have given it a smart makeover with a lot of attention to detail, painting rooms in various neutral Farrow & Ball shades, replacing carpets with French oak floors and revamping bathrooms.

Now Willow Lodge, on Drummin Lane in Delgany, Co Wicklow, a detached 200sq m (2,160sq ft) four-bedroom house on more than an acre, is for sale for €875,000. The owners bought it for €760,000 last year and say they have spent a lot of money on house and garden since then – €20,000 alone on upgrading bathrooms, for example.

The house is hidden away down a lane just off the N11, past the Delgany/Greystones exit: there's a hum of traffic in the garden, but Willow Lodge is secluded, with tall trees all around a manicured lawn dotted with bushes. Electronic gates open into a long driveway down to the house, which is surrounded by the garden.

Potton style

Willow Lodge is a Potton-style house, which means that, inside, wooden beams everywhere are exposed. There’s a large brick inglenook fireplace in the livingroom, giving the house a rustic feel.

The layout of the house is simple: a large kitchen/diningroom opens directly off the front hall on the right, and the large livingroom on the left.

The kitchen has polished granite countertops, a Rangemaster gas and electric hob and double oven, and a utility room off it. There’s space for a large, eight-seater Strawbridge table in the dining area.

The long livingroom opens into a sun room with a high arched ceiling and a roof light: doors open from either side into the garden.

The staircase and four double bedrooms upstairs with sloping ceilings have cream carpets.

The main bedroom has a smart en-suite shower room – like the family bathroom, it has distinctive black-and-white patterned tiles.

The garden is well equipped for entertaining: there’s a wooden gazebo fitted with a table on one of the back patios, hidden lighting and automatic lights in the driveway. There are also power sockets outside.

A neat garden shed is built in the same style as the house. The property is protected by eight security cameras. Water for the house comes from a well and the property has a septic tank.
