A controversial apartment scheme with an 11-storey block at the OPW site at Lad Lane in Dublin 2 has been given the go-ahead from Dublin City Council.
Clondean Ltd, made up of Mark Sloan, Francis Rhatigan and Christopher Jones, got planning permission from Dublin City Council for 134 apartments, a residents' gym, two offices and four live-work units in five buildings. The development will include basement parking for 158 cars.
The decision will come as a blow to some locals, primarily residents of the neighbouring Court Apartments, who opposed the scheme.
Among the concerns voiced by the appellants was the height of one of the proposed residential blocks. Other opponents of the scheme claimed that the scheme would result in overshadowing and loss of light and sunlight.
In a letter to the city council, one resident of the Court Apartments said the scheme would dwarf neighbouring buildings.
John Gormley of the Green Party said that the development would impact the residents of Court Apartments in terms of access to daylight and sunlight, as well as overshadowing and loss of privacy.
Last year , Mr Rhatigan's and Mr Jones's Ellier Developments bought the one-acre site for €22.5 million.
The scheme is of a four, five and six-storey block to Lad Lane; a five and six-storey block to Pembroke Row and a second to Lad Lane; a four-storey block adjoining the Wilton Place apartment complex; and an 11-storey block in the site's southern corner at Wilton Place.
