JACK WHITE ft INSANE CLOWN POSSE
Leck Mich im Arsch
Third Man Records **
It's an ironclad rule of rock'n'roll that, if you admire someone long enough, they will eventually do something so stupid it demeans them, you and pretty much anyone else in a 10-mile radius. Think Johnny Rotten's butter ads, Bowie and Jagger's Dancing in the Streetvideo, and Leonard Cohen's infamous Kentucky Fried Chicken commercials. (Okay, I made up that last one.) Jack White's Frog Chorusmoment is this scatological ditty recorded with brain-dead hip-hoppers Insane Clown Posse. Why? Because White owns the label and no one else could stop him. thirdmanrecords.com
LAURA MARLING
The Muse
Virgin Records ****
On her third album, A Creature I Don't Know, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter teams up with Ryan Adams's producer, Ethan Johns. On the evidence of this, the opening track, it sounds like Marling's most mature and assured work to date.
THE GANDHIS
Mr Data
1969 Records ***
A wacky ode to Data, the pasty-faced android from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and his frequent personality crises. The Gandhis play Doyles in Dublin this Tuesday night. youtube.com
CAPTAIN MOONLIGHT
We Haven’t a Chance ***
If you’re familiar with the oeuvre of Irish rapper Captain Moonlight (aka Kevin Spratt), you’ll know that his pet topics are misbehaving politicians and the exploits of the Kilkenny hurling team. Clearly, the man is not about to run out of material anytime soon. captainmoon light.bandcamp.com
DAPPY
No Regrets
Takeover Entertainment ***
On his debut solo single, the N-Dubz rapper compares himself to Chris Brown (“I’ve been down”), Kurt Cobain (“I feel your pain”) and Richard Branson (“I’m just just a kid from Camden”). Word is his real hero is Take That’s Jason Orange, but that he couldn’t come up with a rhyme for that name. (Hmm, what about “Basin Florange”?)
