Apps aimed at children have to tick a number of boxes. First and foremost, they have to be entertaining. Secondly, they have to be easy to use. And a bit of education wouldn't hurt either. The latest app from StoryToys manages to fill all those requirements. A digital pop-up book, it's the story of Thumbelina with an interactive twist. In between the pages of the story are pop-up scenes that children can interact with. Some are like a game (moving Thumbelina around to avoid obstacles as she makes her escape, for example), while others are just a matter of tap the right object in the right order. If your child isn't quite of reading age, it's not a problem. The book is read aloud page by page, as are the instructions for each pop-up scene. The text is also provided in an onscreen book format, so children can practice their reading skills as well. The app manages to combine old and new quite well – a nice amount of interactive content with traditional reading. storytoys.com
