Originally devised for China's "Year of Spain" in 2007, Affinity Pathsis a major exhibition of contemporary Spanish photography, incorporating work by 10 photographers, including several internationally celebrated figures, such as Christina Garcia Rodero, whose España Oculta, chronicling local rituals and festivals, is a benchmark of documentary photography. Photography's star has been in the ascendant for several years now, and the richness and diversity of current possibilities are reflected in the work on view. As with Rodero's approach, there is often a specifically Spanish flavour. This doesn't mean insularity, though. Today's artists can draw on the wealth of visual tradition in Iberian culture, with strong links extending in all directions, from Europe to the north, Africa to the south and across the Atlantic to the Americas.
