STOCKS on Wall Street ended mixed as bargain hunters failed to counter widespread frustrations with the federal budget stalemate.

The Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks was up 7.59 points to 5,181.43 at the close after recovering from a 40 point deficit earlier in the afternoon. But broad market indexes finished mixed.

Declining issues led advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume was moderately heavy.

Big Board volume total led 433.35 million shares as against 512.51 million in the previous session.

The NYSE's composite index lost 0.4 to 330.18. Standard and Poor's 500 stock index tell 0.96 to 616.74.
