Universal in industry-first legal action
Universal Music, the world's largest record company, has launched the established media industry's first legal action against user-generated internet sites in the wake of its distribution deal last week with YouTube, the most popular video-sharing website.
In separate lawsuits, Universal alleged that Grouper.com - recently acquired by Sony Pictures Entertainment - and Bolt.com had built up traffic by encouraging users to share music videos from its artists without their permission. In one incident, it claimed a video for the Mariah Carey song "Shake it Off" was viewed more than 50,000 times on Grouper without the company's permission. - (Financial Times service)
O'Leary to attend airport conference
Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary will join a number of international speakers and delegates at a two-day international airport conference at the Great Southern Hotel in Dublin Airport on Monday, October 23rd.
The conference, entitled Towards Sustainable Airport Development, is jointly organised by Fingal Development Board and Insight Media.
The event will also hear from Sean Dorgan, chief executive of IDA Ireland, whose organisation recently expressed concern regarding Dublin Airport and its potential negative impact on future foreign direct investment in the greater Dublin region.
Woman 'frozen out' of companies
A woman has claimed before the High Court that she is being "frozen out" of a group of companies established by her late husband to provide a private ambulance service to several hospitals.
In proceedings against Mr Paul Ffrench O'Carroll, Ms Judith Maughan, of Glenageary, Co Dublin, is seeking access to the books and records of eight companies that operate as one entity, plus an order allowing her to nominate a director to those companies.
The companies are Doctors Orders Ltd, Medicall Ltd, Medicare Limited, Medicall South Ltd, La Source Med Ltd, Care Ambulance Ltd, Medicall Medical Ltd, and Meditrans Ltd, all with addresses at Cambridge Terrace, Leeson Park, Dublin 6.
Eirjet issued with 10-day licence
The Shannon-based charter airline Eirjet has been issued with a 10-day "temporary licence" by the Commission for Aviation Regulation amid fears that the airline is experiencing financial difficulties, writes Pat Flynn.
The Commission has confirmed that it has received communication from the company and that yesterday it had issued a temporary air carrier licence to Eirjet, which will expire on October 27th.
Vodafone pledges free texts to IBTS
Vodafone Ireland has pledged one million free text messages to the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) as part of Vodafone/IBTS's Blood Donor Text Message Reminder Programme.
Sony recalls Vaio notebook PCs
Sony's woes deepened yesterday as it said it would ask consumers to send back tens of thousands of its own Vaio notebook PCs as part of a global recall of lithium ion batteries.
Sony's move, combined with recalls by Dell, Apple, Lenovo and other PC manufacturers, brings the number of Sony-made batteries being recalled to eight million. - (Financial Times service)
