Euro seeks leadership

Under siege, the euro is struggling for stability at almost any level. In what is a quiet week on the corporate front, attention is certain to focus again on its performance relative to the dollar and sterling.

What it needs more than anything else is some sign of economic leadership in the stagnating euro zone bloc. It remains to be seen whether Germany's new finance minister will be able to provide this leadership when he unveils his first budget since coming into office.

Smurfit: It has been very much an up and down year for investors in Jefferson Smurfit with the shares stubbornly under-performing the Irish index on product price pressure as its US associate, JS Corp, merged with Stone Corp.

However, attention at the group's annual general meeting on Thursday is certain to focus more on the future than on the past. In particular, shareholders will be looking for news on how directors plan to improve the performance of the group's stock and whether this will include the rumoured backing of the company into its US associate to capitalise on better investor sentiment for the sector in the US.
