There will be no reprieve for the abolition of duty free sales at the end of June 1999, writes Christine Newman in Strasbourg.

The European parliament was told yesterday that continuation of duty-free sales was in conflict with the principles of the single market and that sufficient time had been given to those affected by extending the deadline until June 1999.
