After-tax profits of the computer group Gateway increased by 31 per cent to $99.6 million (£73.67 million) in the first quarter compared the same period in 1998, the company announced yesterday.

Gateway, which employs 1,800 at its Dublin plant, said strong US consumer growth led the way. Turnover increase by 22 per cent to $2.1 billion.
