Ireland's young golfers were in great form at the Galway Scratch Cup at Galway Golf Club. David Jones, from the City of Derry club, emphasised his great potential by heading a top class field to win the trophy with a score of 141.
Jones, who played such a major role in Ireland's Boys' victory in the European Championship, had rounds of 68 and 73 to beat Portmarnock's Noel Fox by one stroke.
Another member of that European Boys' team, Justin Kehoe, also finished on 142 after two 71s and won the nett prize.
The organisers also introduced a novel award during the tournament. They offered a prize for the best dressed golfer which was won by Ballybofey's Enda McMenaman.
Valerie Hassett and Angela Uzielli will renew rivalry when the Irish Senior Ladies take on England at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club, Burnham-onSea on October 20th and 21st. Hassett, who was runner-up in the British Seniors' strokeplay championship leads a strong Irish side that includes past international Catherine Hickey and current captain of the international team Jane Allen. Along with Uzielli, England call on former Curtis Cup captain Liz Boatman.
When Eamon Cregan's return to his native Limerick to manage the hurling team ended in disappointment, he switched his attention to golf. But the change of sport didn't change his fortunes and partnered by Bessie Lawlor, they were beaten in the final of the Hickey Cup at Limerick County Golf and Country Club by Walter and Mary Shanahan.
