National Football League: Division Two B: Despite failing to score for all of 40 minutes, Waterford notched a surprise victory over Tipperary at Dungarvan yesterday.
The home side failed to get on the score sheet in the opening half despite playing with the assistance of a strong wind. Tipperary looked the likely winners at half-time, as they led 0-3 to no-score, turning to play with the assistance of the elements.
But an inspired performance by midfielder Gary Hurney turned the game Waterford's way in the closing half hour.
It took 16 minutes for the first score to be recorded, when Ian Barnes found the range for the visitors and Tipp added another brace when Brian Lacey and Declan Browne found the target.
Anthony Fitzgerald converted a free for Waterford in the 40th minute to open their account, before Wayne Hennessy added another. Further points from Liam Ó Lionain and sub Joe Phelan had Waterford on parity entering the final quarter.
The home side took the lead in the 61st minute when Hurney converted a free and five minutes later he converted a 40-metre free from the sideline.
