Mark Waugh, the Australian Test star who will play for Ireland against Zimbabwe in the two one-day internationals tomorrow and Thursday, yesterday made a return visit to Castle Avenue where he made something of an impression back in 1986.
Then, playing as a last-minute substitute for the MCC against Ireland, he hit an undefeated double-century and century in his two innings. Waugh was not out 239 in the first (270 minutes), 101 not out in the second (90 minutes) in a magnificent batting display, and that before making his Test and one-day international debut.
His presence in the national team should certainly attract onlookers in some numbers to Castle Avenue over the next few days. During his Irish stay, Waugh will also hold coaching clinics at under-age levels at various venues in Leinster, the North and Munster.
