Videos: Galway take `best ever' award

Straight into the charts this Christmas is Theatre of Dreams: An Insider's Guide to Old Trafford (£13.99). Presented by television host Eamonn Holmes, it's an access-all-areas-type documentary which takes you on a backstage tour to the manager's office, VIP areas and, of course, the dressingroom before matches.

If action is more your ball game and you have a favourite shade of red, both Manchester United and Liverpool have released volume two of their Greatest Games (£14.99). They feature classic encounters and the latter is worth the price alone to recall Robbie Fowler's demolition of Aston Villa in the '96 Cup semi-final.

There's more action in 300 All Time Greatest Manchester United Goals (only £6.99), a trip through all the finest net-bangers from the last four decades, including Best, Charlton, Law, Robson, Hughes and Giggs.

Arsenal's latest release is the aptly titled Arsene(al) Wenger - A year through the eyes of the Gunners Boss (£15.99). It claims to be a personal account of the highs (and lows) of last season's Double and inconsistent run so far this year. John Gregory also explains the magic he worked with Aston Villa in Up The Villa (£15.99).

Off the field, BBC commentator John Motson presents his equivalent of a football Oscar - a MOTTY - in Motty Takes The Mike (£15.99). The awards include Pottiest Penalty, Craziest Own Goal and Daftest Miss.

Ron Atkinson recalls 25 years in the dug-out with his personal presentation Big Ron Bites Back (£12.99). Who else could possibly choose from so many disastrous own goals, awesome misses, transfer turkeys and goalkeeping clangers.

There's another best of from BBC's They Think It's All Over - Below the Belt (£17.99) which includes 15 minutes too outrageous for TV. A bit sad is Alister McGowan's Football Backchat - The Second Leg (£15.99) which turns the stars of 1998 into the most humorous moments of the year. Sadder still is Nick Hancock - Football Doctor (£15.99), described as giving the game a full medical.

Surprisingly, there are no decent World Cup videos on the shelves so far. The only one that caught my eye was Teargas and Tantrums - The Truth Behind France '98 (£13.99), revealing what really happened from the beaches of Marseille to St Etienne.

A Year `Til Sunday (£14.99) is probably the only video around right now which actually deserves the `best ever' accolade. A fly-on-the-wall look at Galway's successful run to the All-Ireland football title, it could even be nominated for the "Best Actors in a Gaelic Role" academy award, except of course they're not acting.

Offaly fans will be more likely to favour The Final Whistle (£14.99), which is the complete story of the 1998 hurling championship. For a more general football retrospective, New Order - The Story of the 1998 Football Championship (£14.99) is now available.

Murray Walker presents a high octane mix of thrilling action on Murray's Motorsport Spectacular (£17.99). But if crashes are more your style, then a better choice would be Tiff Needall's Mental Motorsport Mayhem (£15.99), featuring the maddest crashes and smashes where, thankfully, "everybody walked away".

There's really only one choice for rugby followers. Living With Lions 2 - The Final Week (£15.99) is part two of the inside-account of the 1997 Lions tour of South Africa, focusing on the preparations for the final game.

Boxing's favourite this Christmas is sure to be Harry Carpenter's Boxing Bedlam (£14.99). It revisits many of those ferocious moments when boxers climb up off the canvas to win (or lose) in style. Also in the charts is Prince Naseem's Greatest Hits (£15.99), an essential videography for fans of the world's most outrageous fighter.

If one of your new year resolutions is to take up golf then a good starting point might be Leslie Nielsen's Stupid Little Golf Video (£11.99). This claims to be the ultimate instructional video for bad golfers and is quite simply bad golf at its best.

There is also a good laugh courtesy of Frankie Dettori, whose Horsing Around (£13.99) deals with the most unusual things to have happened on a racecourse.

Finally, with such phenomenal success in Irish athletics this year, courtesy of Sonia O'Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan, it appears both their videos have already sold out. Sonia's Double Double and McKiernan's Marathons were nowhere to be found.
