Staying put in Castlecomer

Castlecomer voted for the change to full membership for women in 1991 but to date no women have taken up the option. Lady captain, Marnie Brennan says that the women are more than happy with their set up in the picturesque Kilkenny club.

"The ladies play in competition every weekend and we have 11 Sundays a year for ladies' competitions. So we are more than happy to remain as associate members. Relations between the men and the women were never better in Castlecomer because of the successes in Inter-Club competitions, particularly this year.

"The ladies have qualified for the final of the Boyne Trophy where we meet Waterford and we are also in the final of the Mail On Sunday All-Ireland Foursomes. The men are also hitting the high spots. The Barton Cup team gave the club a great boost when they travelled to Malahide and won the first leg of the Barton Cup final 32. All the ladies will be cheering them on in the second leg at Castlecomer on Sunday week. The club is also in the final of the Duggan Cup against Edenderry.

"Equal rights have been discussed at several annual general meetings but so far we are more than happy to carry on as we are."

The club made the necessary changes in their constitution in 1991, opening the way for women to apply for full membership and a vote in the running of the club, but so far the present women's membership has not taken up the offer.

Castlecomer was founded in 1936 and affiliated to the GUI and ILGU in the same year. Membership is over 450 for this nine hole course.
