St Mel's of Longford scored their expected win over St Declan's of Cabra in perfect conditions at Michael Fay Park, Longford, yesterday. However, while the 28-times provincial champions had a comfortable margin at the end, the scoreline did not reflect the pattern of the game - the Dublin school had kicked 10 wides as compared to four for St Mel's.

Impressive full forward William Murray fired home the first St Mel's goal after just nine minutes and the home team led 1-6 to 0-5 at the break. John Kiernan put the issue beyond doubt when he flicked home a second goal in the 47th minute.

Scorers: St Mel's - W Murray 1-3; J Kiernan 1-2; D Barden, K Smith G Kenny 0-2 each; S Lynch, E Reilly 0-1 each. St Declan's: L Franzoni 0-4; G Noonan 0-2; G Smith 0-1.
