Tottenham 0 Man United 4:  Scintillating Manchester United restored their six-point lead at the top of the Premiership with a sensational victory at Tottenham.

But the result was tinged with controversy as Cristiano Ronaldo won, and scored, a disputed penalty.

The Portugal winger fired home the opener at White Hart Lane on the stroke of half time but it was hard to tell the extent of the contact as Steed Malbranque and Lee Young-Pyo tried to stop his run.

But the incident did not affect Ronaldo who turned in another dazzling display on the flanks and set up Paul Scholes for United's third after Nemanja Vidic had doubled the lead.

Ryan Giggs ran through to add to Spurs' embarrassment late on and Republic of Ireland international John O'Shea finished in goal as Edwin van der Sar broke his nose and United had used all their substitutes.

After the game Scholes, who was man-of-the-match following another fantastic performance, vowed his team will "keep plugging away" in the title race.

"The score said everything, to win 4-0 away from home at a tough place like this is a great result for us," Scholes told Sky Sports 1.

"We won it going forward. We knew at the back we could exploit them with pace and strength up front so we wanted to get the ball forward and we managed to do that.

"It was such a big result for us. We thought Chelsea would win yesterday so this weekend we had the more difficult game so to come and win is a big result for us.

"We'll keep plugging away and hopefully at the end of the season we'll get our just rewards."

O'Shea admitted his spell in goal was "nerve-wracking".

He said: "I was very proud and I just asked Edwin if he gets a clean sheet bonus and if so, I want half of it!

"When I saw Robbie Keane bearing down on my I thought he might try to put it through my legs but I got lucky. It's a special moment for me to look back on.

"It was a bit nerve-wracking, especially with a corner to defend straight away and every time they got the ball near the penalty area the crowd kept shouting 'shoot'.
