Ronaldo 'calm' after Madrid debut

Cristiano Ronaldo declared himself satisfied following his Real Madrid debut at the Tallaght Stadium last night

Cristiano Ronaldo declared himself satisfied following his Real Madrid debut at the Tallaght Stadium last night. The Spanish giants required a late Karim Benzema strike to overcome Shamrock Rovers but the world’s most expensive player feels the ‘Galacticos’ are only beginning to gel.

"It's still soon to draw conclusions,” the world player of the year said afterwards. “What's important is to try things out, win and, later, try to score more goals. We've just started. Nothing's been defined. My team-mates are doing a good job, but this is the first time we've played together on the same pitch."

"I don't mind playing down the right, the left or the middle. I just want to play, help the team and blend in with my team-mates as fast as possible. I am calm and working well. I hope to score many goals."

With Kaka in Madrid alongside Real's other Confederations Cup representatives and Benzema starting on the bench, Ronaldo provided the only first-half evidence of Real's audacious spending spree of more than €200 million.

Despite resting five leading players, the hosts matched their opponents in the first half, allowing only fullback Marcelo a clear sight at goal.

Ronaldo drew the biggest cheer of the first half when his free kick went well wide and when a second effort tamely struck the wall 15 minutes later, the crowds taunts of "who are ya" grew louder.

And Ronaldo played no further part as new Real coach Manuel Pellegrini made nine changes at halftime.
