Mark Hughes hailed Manchester City's progress to the Uefa Cup second qualifying round and then insisted new signing Tal Ben Haim will not be the last new face at Eastlands this summer.

The former Bolton and Chelsea defender cost City £5million just 24 hours before their 2-0 victory over part-timers EB/Streymur at Barnsley's Oakwell ground on Thursday night, which completed a 4-0 aggregate win.

Manager Hughes is working this pre-season to ensure further European progress - the second qualifying round draw is today - as well as adding to his squad ahead of the Premier League kick-off in a fortnight.

He said: "Ben Haim is a good, experienced, Premier League defender who maybe has a point to prove. He feels he did not get enough games at Chelsea and is looking to be involved a lot more here.

"He will not be the only new arrival. We are looking for good players in several positions and are working on a few deals."

Hughes paid tribute to the Faroe Island part-timers, who endured a 36-shot onslaught from his Manchester City side.

Streymur also won acclaim from the City following for their defensive defiance as the Premier League side rained in shots throughout the 90 minutes.

Hughes said: "They defended extremely well. It was damage limitation from them really, but you have to give them praise for their efforts.

"Their goalkeeper had a wonderful night, they threw bodies in the way of everything and made life very difficult for us."

Martin Petrov and Darius Vassell scored the second-half goals that ensured City are in the draw for the next round.

Hughes added: "I was pleased with my lads. They kept at them and if their goalkeeper had not had such a great night, we would have won it at a canter.

"But frankly we were never in any danger. We should have won by a fair margin and we should have been quicker in possession but the key is that we have qualified for the next round, that was the objective."
