In succumbing to a 1-1 draw with Grange of Edinburgh yesterday, Pembroke Wanderers will need to beat Minsk of Belarus by a comprehensive margin today if they are to reach tomorrow's final of the European Cup Winners Cup (B Division) in Vienna.
The Scots have always matched Irish sides at various levels and this was again the case yesterday. Pembroke were more forceful in the first half but failed to break down a concentrated defence. Nor indeed could they dominate Grange's strong midfield sector, in which Ulsterman Andy McBride played with his usual fire.
The first attack of the second half, however, yielded a short corner, gained by Alan Giles, and although Justin Sherriff's shot was blocked, Devin Donnelly coolly slotted Pembroke into the lead.
That should have given the Irish team sufficient impetus, yet it was Grange who mounted most of the subsequent pressure. Francis de Rosa and Ken Treacy showed encouraging efficiency in clearing their lines, but six minutes from the final hooter, Donald McFarlane netted the Scot's equaliser.
While Pembroke have got to exert themselves, Harlequins are assured of playing in the final of the six-team women's competition. Collegians of Gibraltar will provide no problem today, for yesterday they drew only 1-1 with Orsundsbro of Sweden, who had lost 14-0 to the Cork side on Thursday.
