Paddy Ambrose dies, aged 72

Former Shamrock Rovers and Republic of Ireland striker Paddy Ambrose has died at the age of 72.

Former Shamrock Rovers and Republic of Ireland striker Paddy Ambrose has died at the age of 72.

The Dubliner, who signed for Rovers in 1949 and played with them until 1964 when injury forced him to move into a coaching role at the club, won four leagues and four FAI Cup during his time at Glenmalure Park, scoring 109 league goals along the way.

First capped for the Republic against Norway in November 1954, Ambrose went on to make a further four full international appearances, but he also played against England at amateur international level as well as appearing in two Ireland B and seven inter-league games.
