Irish swimming received a major boost at the fifth annual Leisureland International meet in Salthill last night when one senior and two junior Irish records were set. Dubliner Nick O'Hare, who swims out of the Eastern Bay Club and is a member of the Team 2000 squad, beat his own time for the 50 metres freestyle when he clocked 22.76 seconds. He improved by one-hundredth of a second his old time which was set at a World Cup meet in Glasgow a year ago.

Last night, he beat two highly-rated visitors in Mike Fibbins of Camden and Jamaica's Sion Brinn who is ranked sixth in the world in the 100 metres freestyle.

City of Cork's Lee Kelleher, also on the Team 2000 squad, finished second in the women's 50 metres butterfly but had the consolation of setting an Irish junior record in 29.06 seconds behind Wilma Van Hofwegen. Earlier Kelleher had taken the 200 metres butterfly by nearly three seconds.

Niamh Cawley of Claremorris set another junior record when she won the women's 100 metres backstroke by 1.69 seconds from Claire Hogan (St Paul's).
