WHILE Cork’s winning of a sixth All-Ireland women’s football senior title attracted most of the attention at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon, there was an interesting sub-plot emanating from the undercard too.

The junior final between New York and Wicklow finished in a draw, meaning an unplanned and costly return to Ireland for New York for the replay.

“It was an unbelievable result,” says New York secretary Margaret Kelly.

“We’re estimating a cost of something like $50,000 (€37,000) to travel over again for the replay, when accommodation and air fares for 30 people are taken into account.

“Where the money’s going to come from we don’t know, but we’re going to beg, steal or borrow to make sure that we get back. We’ll have a meeting this week with everybody who’s involved to try to sort something.

“We had over 250 people at our banquet on Sunday night so there is support for us and Pat Quill (LGFA president) has said he will do all he can to help us.

“Initially, we had hoped that maybe the replay could take place over here but the second match (intermediate final between Cavan and Westmeath) being drawn too changed that.”
