Galway’s All-Ireland winning manager Micheál Donoghue has become the first hurling manager since Liam Sheedy in 2010 to win the Philips Lighting Sports Manager of the Year award.

Donoghue won the monthly award for August after leading the Tribsemen to a first All-Ireland senior hurling title in 29 years with their win over Waterford in the final.

Donoghue beat 11 other nominees to the award with Cork hurling boss Kieran Kingston and Dublin’s All-Ireland winning manager Jim Gavin making up the rest of the GAA contingent.

The other nominees were the four horse racing trainers Willie Mullins, Jessica Harrington, Aidan O’Brien and Joseph O’Brien.

Brighton’s Chris Hughton, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers and Cork City’s double winning manager John Caulfield were the soccer nominees while UCC Glanmire basketball’s Mark Scannell and Cycling Ireland’s High Performance Manager Brian Nugent completed the list.
