Meath in fine trim

Co Meath GC broke new ground last week by appointing a club professional for the first time

Co Meath GC broke new ground last week by appointing a club professional for the first time. Robin Machin, who was teaching professional at the Open Golf Centre in Dublin, took up his new duties in Trim last Thursday. "We are extremely happy with the way the club has gone and we now see the appointment of Robin as a further major move," said president Ernie Lynam. "For many years we have felt the need for a club professional and we are delighted we have realised that ambition."

Co Meath have made wonderful strides in the past few years with the building of a new clubhouse and the change in the texture and layout of the greens - they are all now sand based - is another big plus. Only recently the club appointed new caterers, Jimmy and Bernadette Elsabani. Golf in Trim nowadays is a huge challenge in beautiful ornate surroundings, thanks mainly to the work of greenkeeper John Cribben, a recent acquisition from Druids Glen. This year's captain is Dr Larry McEntee, a first cousin of former Meath GAA footballer Gerry. Larry, whose father was a founder member of the club, has as his vice-captain John Ennis, who up to this year was honorary secretary. Peggy Dowd is lady president while the captain is Valerie Fitzgerald and her vice-captain is Anne McElhenny.
