PORTSMOUTH COMPLETED a dramatic, come-from-behind victory to go through to the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating Coventry 2-1 after extra-time in last night’s third round replay.

Portsmouth scored a last-minute equaliser in normal time, then scored in time added on in the second half of extra-time to knock the home side out at Ricoh Arena.

Coventry took the lead through Leon Best’s superb half-volley in the first half as he turned to smash a delightful effort into the top corner from the edge of the area.

But as the match moved into injury time, a mix-up at the back saw the unfortunate Wright head into his own net.

Then, with penalties looming, Aaron Mokoena got up for a corner to head home and break Coventry hearts.

Midfielder Barry Ferguson’s first goal for Birmingham was sufficient to seal victory over Nottingham Forest in their replay at St Andrews and clinch a visit to Everton.

Alex McLeish’s summer capture from Rangers broke the deadlock 16 minutes into the second half and earned a fortunate victory for the home side.

Birmingham fielded a full strength side but were often second best against Forest. They were indebted to two fine saves from Joe Hart for keeping them on level terms before Ferguson settled the issue.

Jamie Ward helped fire Sheffield United into the fourth round as QPR made their familiar early exit despite a late rally.

United were clinging onto Lee Williamson’s early opener when Ward scored with his first touch, and then immediately set up a third for Richard Cresswell.

A late QPR comeback, courtesy of Akos Buzsaky’s penalty and Damion Stewart’s header, set up a nervy finish but the hosts were unable to arrest their dismal FA Cup record.

Derby beat Millwall 5-3 on penalties, after both sides had scored in extra time to draw 1-1.
