Mark Scanlon and Derek Finnegan were in the leading group that sprinted for the medals in the junior road race at the World Championships at San Sebastian yesterday, but they had to settle for 28th and 29th places as Italian Crescenzo D'Amato swept to victory.
At the end of the 120 km, D'Amato won from Martin Bolt of Switzerland and Margus Salumets of Estonia, with Scanlon and Finnegan on the same time, two hours 54 minutes 49 seconds.
David McQuaid was also with the leaders until he cramped going out on the last of the eight laps, but he kept going to take 102nd place, seven minutes and 10 seconds down.
