BASKETBALL: Michael Jordan leaves the stuffy, boardroom atmosphere of the Washington Wizards' front office to take direct charge of the team's fortunes on court as he ends a three-year retirement and at 38 tests his talent against the new wave of superstars.
The Broadway opening of Jordan and the Wizards against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden will be shown live on BBC1 tonight at 11.05 p.m.
BASEBALL: Randy Johnson threw a three-hit shutout and Matt Williams belted a three-run homer as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the three-time defending champions New York Yankees 4-0 on Sunday to claim a 2-0 World Series lead. The third game in the series is in New York tonight.
EQUESTRIAN SPORT: Ireland's quartet of Kevin Babington, Cian O'Connor, Robert Splaine and Captain Gerry Flynn romped to victory in the Washington Nations Cup on Sunday night, Grania Willis reports.
A superb pathfinding clear from Pennsylvania-based Babington - a member of the European gold medal team - set the standard and, although plans went somewhat awry when Flynn returned the discard 24 on Carraig Dubh, O'Connor and Splaine put things back on track with a clear apiece. O'Connor and Splaine then notched up double clears to set up the victory.
HURLING: Cork beat Wexford 2-17 to 2-8 to take the All-Ireland Intermediate hurling championship final at Dungarvan yesterday.
