High flying Derry at Sligo

FAI Cup: No team wanted Derry away. No team got Derry away

FAI Cup: No team wanted Derry away. No team got Derry away. Sligo Rovers will, instead, host the cup favourites at the Showgrounds when the semi-finals get underway at the end of the month.

"I'm okay with it," says Sligo manager Seán Connor. "I didn't really care who we got, as long as it was at home. We probably got the easiest draw in Killester in the last round but it didn't turn out that easy. This now is probably the hardest draw."

Sligo, too, might well fancy their chances of springing an upset considering they've already beaten Stephen Kenny's side in the league this season.

"At least we know what we're up against. League form goes out the window. The fact they did well in Europe and are doing well in the league means nothing now, it's a one-off game.

"There's nothing to be frightened about. We want to play in Europe and the best way for us to do that is win the cup."

Dublin sides Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic renew rivalries at Tolka Park in the other semi-final.

Rovers beat John McDonnell's side in the League Cup earlier this season but Rovers chairman Jonathan Roche says bygone results will have no bearing on this particular meeting.

"It'll be a different game. We've a changed team from when we beat them that time but I think they know we won't be pushovers."

Roche concedes his team were fortunate "in a way" to have beaten Athlone in the quarter-final. Rovers scored two late goals in the dying minutes to secure their semi-final ticket and leave their opponents crushed.

"We got the rub of the green with those late goals but if we were to get two more in the last six minutes and it meant my club reached a final, well I'd take that."
