AUSTRALIA'S Michael Doohan won the Imola grand prix yesterday for his seventh win in eight starts in the 500cc world championship

Doohan's Honda, which finished ahead of Japan's Honda riders Nobuatsu Aoki and Takuma Aoki, must surely win his fourth consecutive world title after Alex Criville, in second place overall, suffered severe hand injuries in practice for last weekend's Dutch grand prix.

However, the Australian suffered a terrible start from pole position and had to ride through the field to restore his supremacy.

Aoki led from the first turn and the Suzuki of Australian Anthony Gobert tucked in behind him, leaving Doohan in fourth spot.

However, by the seventh of the 25 laps, Doohan had regained the lead and eventually cruised to his 41st grand prix victory by 8.6 seconds from Nobuatsu Aoki.
