Frankie Dettori was banned for six days, from September 21st-26th, for irresponsible riding at Goodwood yesterday. The Italian jockey came over to the stands rails on Leading Note in the Tilney Portfolio Limited Stakes when the field for the mile and a half race swung into the straight, and took Pennys From Heaven, ridden by Chris Rutter, with him.
The race went to Aerleon Pete, ridden by Darryll Holland, who stayed in the centre of the course and won by six lengths from Pennys From Heaven. Leading Note finished fourth.
Dettori, who clinched a treble in the last race on Iceband, said: "I came across and took one with me. I didn't know he was there." Asked if he would appeal, he said, referring to his last ban: "I've appealed once already."
Stewards secretary William Nunneley commented: "Rutter didn't want to go there. The stewards found that Dettori made his manoeuvre and must have known that Pennys From Heaven was at his girth."
Luckily, Dettori ends his ban just before the Ascot Festival of Racing on September 27th. It is the second time within a month that Dettori has been banned at Goodwood, as he received a five-day suspension there on August 23rd over his riding of Cape Cross, who was disqualified after winning the Tripleprint Celebration Mile.
Kieren Fallon now leads Dettori by five in the race for the jockeys' championship, for which the Tote's revised betting is Fallon 8 to 15 from 4 to 6 and Dettori 11 to 8 (from 11 to 10).
At Doncaster Daggers Drawn sharpened his appetite for the two-year-old championship when completing a hat-trick. He maintained his position as 5 to 1 favourite for the English 2,000 Guineas with a half length success in the Group Two Laurent-Perrier Rose Champagne Stakes.
