Clinical Niland just too good

TENNIS/National Indoor championships: If there was anything to be learned from the David Lloyd National Indoor Championships at Dublin's Riverview Club over the past week it was that there is little real depth on the domestic scene.

Conor Niland and Welsh international Rebecca Llewellan lifted the singles titles with ease.

Niland, on leave from the University of California, is streets ahead of his rivals at home. His dismissal of Eoin Heavey in the final emphasised the fact.

Llewellan was never seriously challenged, dropping just four games en route to final victory earned at the expense of Rachel Dillon 6-1, 6-3.

There was a clear sense of inevitability as Niland and Llewellan surged through their finals.

Niland's consistent length off the ground seriously restricted Heavey's chances of getting into a groove. The Limerickman was 4-0 up in jig time.

Then came a flicker of light for the challenger with an unexpected break of serve.

The top seed broke back immediately, however, and Heavey's bid was further undermined when he lost his service to love at the outset of the second set.

Niland pocketed the match 6-1 6-1, a satisfying and clinically executed victory before he revisits the British ATP circuits en route back to the US.
