Boylan signs up again

Sean Boylan has been re-appointed as manager-coach of the Meath team for a 16th successive year

Sean Boylan has been re-appointed as manager-coach of the Meath team for a 16th successive year. The decision was confirmed at a meeting of the Meath county board in Pairc Tailteann last night. After Meath's shock defeat by Offaly in this year's Leinster final it was thought that Boylan might step down, but it was learned earlier this week that he had indicated to the board that he would be willing to continue.

Boylan, whose sporting background had more to do with hurling than with football, was first appointed as manager of the Meath team in 1982. He was manager when Meath won the All Ireland title in 1987, '88 and '96 and also led the team to six Leinster titles and two National League wins.

After they were beaten by Dublin by 10 points in the Leinster final, two years ago, Boylan survived a challenge for the position and went on to manage the team which beat Mayo last September.

It is expected that Boylan's selectors will again be Eamonn O'Brien and Frank Foley.
