Boris Becker pulled out of the $328,000 ATP tournament in Boston following the death of his manager Axel Meyer-Wolden yesterday. The three-time Wimbledon champion was to have opened up against Brazilian Fernando Meligeni today, but tournament organisers said they had received a call from one of Becker's agents announcing his withdrawal.
"No one knows where he is, though probably he's back in Germany," said tournament director Alan Morel. Meyer-Wolden, the cofounder of the Grand Slam Cup and 29-year-old Becker's manager since 1993, died in Germany on Monday aged 56 after a battle against liver cancer.
Becker's absence throws into doubt his participation at the US Open starting in New York on August 25th. The world number 13, who says Flushing Meadow will be his last Grand Slam event, also pulled out of last week's tournament in Indianapolis with a calf injury.
