Second-half goals from Alan Oliver and Paul McGee saved Athlone Town from having to apply for re-election as they beat Kilkenny City 2-0 at St Mel's Park yesterday.
Oliver scored his 10th goal of the season three minutes after the interval, while McGee added the second in the 63rd minute as Athlone Town leapfrogged Home Farm/Everton to move out of the bottom two. Home Farm/Everton must therefore apply for re-election after their 3-1 defeat at home to Longford Town at Whitehall on Saturday night, their 20th loss of the season.
Home Farm had the perfect start, Robbie Farrell scoring his ninth goal of the season to give them the lead after three minutes. But Longford, hoping for a top four finish, hit back to equalise within seven minutes when James Farrell scored with a powerful shot from outside the area.
Stephen Kelly headed Longford in front just after the half-hour, while Stephen Gavin clinched the win with a 70th minute penalty.
Cobh Ramblers, who now meet Bohemians in the promotion/relegation play-off, finished their league campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Monaghan United.
Sean Francis put Cobh in front after an hour, Paul Smyth equalising 10 minutes from time for Monaghan United.
