A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a 2003 attack.

In March 2003, a woman was at home with a child in South Dublin when she answered the door to a man claiming to be a satellite TV technician.

After gaining entry to the home, it is alleged the man bound the woman with cable ties, raped her, and forced her to take a bath afterwards in a bid to destroy forensic evidence.

The woman told Gardaí that he had said “cheerio” as he left.

Despite an intensive garda investigation and over 100 witness statements taken, the case remained unsolved.

But two weeks ago, more than 23 years after the attack, the first arrest ever in the case took place.

A man has since been charged in court with three alleged offences; two counts of rape, one of false imprisonment and one of aggravated burglary.

Crime and security editor Conor Lally covered the incident in 2003, the subsequent investigations and the renewed appeal for information the following year.

He joins the In the News podcast to outline what was known at the time, and what has led Gardaí to charge a suspect more than two decades later.
