Sir, - On Thursday April 12th, Dublin Corporation introduced "wheelie bins" on our road. As an example of how to make a pig's ear out of a potential silk purse, those responsible in Dublin Corporation deserve a special award.
We were not consulted or warned in advance. Apart from a few rain sodden leaflets ironically littering the street, there was no information provided to householders.
Many people had gone away for Easter, so wheelie bins remained on the street for a number of days. Dublin Corporation may as well have posted signs on these houses saying: "Owners away, burglars welcome."
Out street is a terrace, with little or no front garden space. The wheelie bins (the first of three we will be given) have to be wheeled in and out through the house each week. This is not a very clean or hygienic practice.
Whatever happened to the sensible proposal that people would pay a fee (say £1 each) for special bin bags? The more you use, the more you pay. this would give us some incentive to cut down on packaging and recycle some of our waste.
In terms of timing, lack of consultation, suitability, and overall strategy this effort by Dublin Corporation was rubbish. - Yours etc.,
Michael Sheahan, Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
