WAITING LISTS

Sir, The recent figures showing the economy is growing faster than expected are to be welcomed. The strong growth on tax revenue which shows that we are at least Pounds 500 million above the Budget Day forecast is a golden opportunity to do something about waiting lists for residential and day places.

In the Eastern Health Board area there are 388 people with a mental handicap on a waiting list for residential places. There are also 428 people on a waiting list for day services and 350 people with a mental handicap unappropriately placed in psychiatric hospitals. Now is the time to do something practical for these people. It would be one more step towards an inclusive society.
