Madam, - Upon the presentation of the report by DKM economic consultants on the economics of the M50, National Toll Roads eased its path by trumpeting the importance of its eazypass toll system as the cure for all ills. They avowed their commitment to it by opening an additional second eazypass-only lane in each direction, albeit only at peak times.
On Tuesday morning, the "new" second eazypass lane northbound disappeared, becoming instead a basket pay lane - a fact advertised by AA Roadwatch during their morning bulletins. This was followed by the opening of the single dedicated northbound eazypass lane to all traffic on Wednesday morning, again notified to the travelling - and if sitting on the M50, parking - public over the radio.
Was the reasoning behind this very public climbdown by NTR based on "inadequate infrastructure along the length of the M50"? Did NTR have a few spare toll booth operators hanging around during the morning rush-hour? Or was it because of the NTR toll booth system's complete inability to handle the traffic being directed at it, particularly at peak hours? - Yours, etc,
SEÁN O'MÁOILMHICIL, Balbriggan.
