Time for Royal prefix to go

Sir, – John S Holmes writes that organisations from businesses to clubs should consider the use of the "Royal" prefix in their names on the basis that we are a republic with the President as head of State (Letters, December 6th).

I’m no monarchist but this view would suggest that all businesses, clubs, societies etc, should consider their names in the context of the current point in time and ignore their history.

Like it or not, Ireland, for a long time, was a part of the British empire and the small number of clubs etc, that use the Royal prefix are a reminder of that history.

More importantly, as we embark on the very early stages of discussions on a new Ireland to embrace all identities on our island, it’s more important than ever to acknowledge our history in its entirety.
