Sir, – Further to recent correspondence (November 9th), we are all aware of the concern about the abuse of alcohol and its far-reaching consequences for society.
But what about the role of the individual and his or her lack of commitment? What has become of the old-fashioned virtues of self-denial and self-discipline?
In the end, it is the individual who is responsible for his own actions and must face up to the problem, whether it be in the city of Dublin or in a remote part of Kerry.
In many rural towns, bars are closing and more often than not empty at night. Whatever about the effects on the economy, we avoid the chaos of closing time described by your letter-writer. – Yours, etc,
JOHN F FALLON,
Boyle, Co Roscommon.

MARY KAVANAGH,
Bray,
Co Wicklow.
