Sir, – A Dublin theatre has added a strap banner over the posters and advertisements for its current production that proudly reads, “Standing ovations nightly”. So it must be really great to warrant a standing ovation, mustn’t it? Not necessarily.
Over the past few years, Dublin audiences seem to think standing and clapping are the fashionable things to do at the end of any performance, be it in theatre, concert hall or school auditorium.
I’m afraid the standing ovation has been completely devalued by pretentious overuse. – Yours, etc,
