Sir, - It seems that the Forum on Broadcasting report has failed to tackle RTÉ's monopoly in Irish broadcasting. But we should still welcome the report for several reasons, including one of its main conclusions that RTÉ is unable to regulate itself and that another body should be formed to control its various business interests.
The forum's finding that RTE has failed to be properly transparent and accountable in its operations and its conclusion that public funding of the station must be conditional on RTE becoming fully accountable and transparent, is without doubt a positive development. This will no doubt be difficult for an organisation that has always shunned public scrutiny, even when it comes to stating how may people actually work for RTE or who gets paid what!
However the report was quite clear in demanding that RTE must now fully explain which public service programming is funded by the €120 million the station receives from the licence-payer. - Yours, etc.,
